Fifty Recommends: Sports Podcasts

Even though many of us are no longer commuting, podcasts are still as popular as ever as a means to switch off. Feel you’ve listened to the best ones out there? Take a look at Fifty Digital’s best sports podcasts below and there might be some new ones for you to try!

Don’t Tell Me The Score – Tom
In each episode, the host Simon Mundie interviews sporting royalty (Jonny Wilkinson, Sir Clive Woodward) around a theme that is relatable to day to day life. I love it as it always leaves me with something to think about, and confirms my belief that sport isn’t just a form of entertainment.

That Peter Crouch Podcast (2.0) – James
Even better than the first, Peter Crouch’s podcasts are always timely, relatable and absolutely hilarious. I often find myself laughing out loud on runs which seems to make me speed up!

Re-cycle – Jim
This is a slightly biased choice as the host is a friend of mine, but Eurosport’s Re-Cycle is a great source of interesting stories and controversies from cycling’s murky history. And if nothing else, they contain a ripping good yarn each week.

Sky Sports Football Podcast – Adam
If I ever find myself with a spare 20 minutes, this is my go-to podcast for a more detailed but light hearted discussion on big talking points in football.

Tailenders – Ben
An absolute must for any cricket fan, though a self-confessed “loosely cricket-based podcast”. The combination of Radios 1’s Greg James, musician Felix White, England bowler Jimmy Anderson, and some bloke called Mattchin sounds bonkers. And yet, it provides the perfect balance of cricketing insight and comedy gold.

Ian Wright, Desert Island Discs – Imogen
If you’ve got a spare 47 minutes, I would thoroughly recommend the Ian Wright Desert Island Disc episode. To the soundtrack of his life, he talks about his remarkable career as a footballer and the journey that got him there. He also discusses his later career as a TV and radio pundit and it is well worth a listen!

Fighting Talk – Maddie
Although a weekly radio show, you can download previous episodes as podcasts to listen back to the carnage and hilarity as guests compete for points with their sporting punditry. Debating relevant topics, Colin Murray leads the conversation and brings to life points which really get you thinking.

Quickly Kevin; Will He Score? – Max
Any podcast that can combine nostalgia and football is a winner for me, and this fits the bill nicely. Hosted by comedian Josh Widdicombe, presenter Chris Scull and ‘Director of Podcast’ Michael Marden, the show has weekly guests, ranging from comedians to referees, to professionals from the 90s, all of whom give fantastic insight into a fantastic period of football.

Stick To Football (Bleacher Report) – Sophie
If you’re an NFL fan, there are plenty of good podcasts out there from ESPN and the NFL network. But STF seems the most appropriate to go for right now, as Thursday night sees the annual NFL Draft take place – where college players are selected by each NFL franchise. STF’s main host, Matt Miller, is an expert on the draft and will give you the best primer possible ahead of the event.

Rugby Union Weekly – Ollie
The BBC’s rugby correspondent leads this weekly discussion about the world of rugby union. But what makes the show are the pros and ex-pros that join him – the likes of Ugo Monye, Chris Ashton, and Danny Care. There’s plenty of banter between the hosts, and plenty of interesting rugby insight too.
