Coming to another screen near you…have you heard of Quibi?
Quibi also know as ‘Quick Bites’ is the new kid on the block taking on the likes of TikTok and IGTV, by bringing short-form video to life in a way that we haven’t seen before.
Made for mobile, it’s a subscription streaming app based purely on content which is 10 minutes or less. It consists of ‘TV Shows’ right through to Daily News essentials. The platform prides itself on producing “fresh content from today’s top talent – one quick bite at a time.” It has already enlisted the likes of LeBron James and Chrissy Teigen as either creators or presenters of shows.
Whilst this may seem like just another Netflix or Hulu, founder Jeffrey Katzenberg insists Quibi is not a substitute or competitor. This is because “the core demographics of 25-35-year-olds are watching 60-70 min of YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat daily” and that is a consumer space into which Quibi places itself.
Quibi’s other unique selling point is a very cool tech-twist on how you view the content. ‘Turnstyle’, a patent-pending technology, lets you easily switch between portrait and landscape viewing modes, giving you a different viewing experience for each one. This means that every show is filmed and edited in both 16:9 and 9:16 (much like a lot of branded content these days), but with premium value in mind for both, rather than one being an after-thought.
This is a great way to appeal to the audience and their individual experience, rather than it being based on the content being best suited to a platform.
Launching early April 2020 at just $5 a month ($8 if you want it ad-free!), we’re looking forward to seeing whether Quibi’s bite-sized content will leave us hungry for more.
